UPSC candidates reached Supreme Court, sought one more chance in civil services main examination

The candidates who have qualified the Civil Services Preliminary Examination of the Union Public Service Commission have approached the Supreme Court. Three candidates have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). All these three candidates were unable to appear for the Civil Services Main Examination held in the second week of January, 2022 due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In such a situation, these candidates have filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding one more chance to appear in the Civil Services Main Examination. Accepting the petition on Monday, 28 February, a bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice CT Ravikumar fixed the matter for hearing on March 7. The petitioners have demanded in the Supreme Court that the Court should send them to the Union Public Service Commission. Before releasing the result of Civil Services Main Examination, direct them to give one more chance to appear in the examination or make any separate arrangement for them so that they can re-appear their missed papers. Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for the petitioners, told the bench that the UPSC main examination was conducted in the second week of January and out of the three petitioners, two of them appeared in some paper before they turned COVID-19 positive. The petitioners, in their application filed through advocate Shashank Singh, have stated that in the RT PCR Kovid-19 test reports dated January 13, 14 and January 6, they were found to be corona infected. It has been argued in the petition that due to the restrictions of Kovid-19 imposed under the strict quarantine rules of the government, they could not give the UPSC main examination completely. Apart from this, there was also a lack of policies from the Union Public Service Commission like conducting separate examination for corona infected candidates or sitting in a separate room.Such petitioners had missed out on appearing in the Civil Services Examination. The candidates, citing Article-32, have sought a direction from the apex court to the UPSC to make them appear in the next civil services main examination as an additional effort or to conduct a separate examination of the remaining papers as an alternative arrangement. .
